Polar Air Cargo will pay a $17.4 million fine to settle charges the freighter operator took part in a global conspiracy with other airlines to fix international air cargo prices.
Polar parent Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings announced the settlement with the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust division this week and said it covered price-fixing allegations for shipments from the United States and Australia between 2000 and 2003.
The penalty is the first against Polar in a series of antitrust investigations into allegations that carriers manipulated fuel charges and other fees in a global conspiracy. Carriers including Lufthansa Cargo, British Airways, Qantas and others have faced billions of dollars in penalties and several former cargo executives have been sentenced to jail terms in the United States.

Atlas said the penalty was against its wholly owned Polar LLC subsidiary and said the employees involved in the alleged price-fixing actions remain with the company.

The show “Put Him in [Camp] Bucca” has drawn numerous protests but has stayed on air throughout the fasting month, broadcasting its “stings” on well-known Iraqi personalities.
All of them were ensnared by being invited to the headquarters of the private television station Al Baghdadia to be interviewed, but en route to the station a fake bomb would be planted in their car while they were being searched by Iraqi soldiers, who were in on the deception.
The unwitting celebrities are then secretly filmed, Candid-Camera-style, as they reacted with shock, disbelief and anger as fake checkpoint guards shout abuse at them: “Why do you want to blow us up?” “You are a terrorist.” “How much did they pay you to do it? You will be executed.”

The labor union claims things have not been handled properly for the next July-August peak season.
The SNPT says too many pilots have been hired for this period and other solutions should have been discussed.
A first meeting between labor union representatives and the Air Tahiti Nui management was scheduled for Monday.
But this first meeting just did not happen because there was no agreement on where this encounter was supposed to take place.
Another round of negotiations is scheduled for Tuesday morning (Tahiti time), according to “La Dépêche de Tahiti”.
If no agreement is found, the strike could start as early as Friday May 21.
